Taekwon-do was influenced by both China’s “soft style” martial arts like Kung-Fu and Tai Chi, which utilize flowing, circular techniques; and Japan’s “hard style” martial arts like Karate, that use direct strikes with the hands and feet. Taekwon-do also incorporates physics to ensure that anybody can defend against anyone, rather than relying on physical strength or size alone.
